Learning Outcomes |
Upon completion of the course, students will: 1. Use and present quantitative information in connection with an argument or problem solution and explicate it in an effective format. 2. Construct and present a detailed problem statement with evidence of relevant contextual factors and possible approaches for solving the problem, then implement a solution and review the results. 3. Develop a logical, consistent plan to solve a problem, recognize consequences of the solution, and articulate a reason for choosing solution method. 4. Apply the strategies for problem solving method to problems using both inductive and deductive reasoning. 5. Develop procedures for using sets and visualizing relations among sets with Venn diagrams, and apply them to solve problems that are modeled with sets. 6. Develop logical arguments and determine validity of arguments using truth tables or Euler diagrams. 7. Identify patterns in numbers and prove or disprove the patterns. 8. Find unique prime factorizations of composite numbers. 9. Describe the fundamental counting principle to solve counting problems. 10. Solve counting problems involving permutations, combinations, or Pascal?s triangle. 11. Find probabilities with theoretical, empirical probability formulas. 12. Find probabilities with addition rules. 13. Apply the conditional probability formula and determine whether the two events are independent. 14. Determine the annual percentage rate for different types of loans. 15. Compute monthly mortgage payments of fixed-rate mortgages and adjustable-rate mortgages. 16. Determine returns on stock investments. |

This is an open source text, and is available to access for free* online at: https://courses.lumenlearning.com/waymakermath4libarts/ (It is also available on Blackboard) * If a student purchased the Seahawk Book Bundle they should already have been provided an access code for course materials. Only students who opted out will be required to purchase an access code separately. This can be done by clicking any of the homework links in the course content and following the instructions. Total cost of the access code for this course is $25. |

Instructor Policies |
Blackboard/LumenOHM: All of your course materials and assignments are accessible through LumenOHM via Blackboard. You will not need to sign up for or log on to any outside website, everything should be integrated fully into Blackboard, It is important that you are able to access Blackboard and that you do so regularly to check for any updates and/or announcements. Students should only use their LSCPA email for this course; any communications from personal email accounts will be ignored. Attendance and Participation: Your attendance and participation in class activities is crucial to your success, and will count as 10% of your final grade. Homework: All homework will be done online using Lumen Learning's Online Homework Manager, LumenOHM. The system is fully integrated in to Blackboard, so you do not need to register or log on to any outside websites. Simply log on to Blackboard and you will be able to get started. You will need to purchase an access code either from the campus bookstore, or through Blackboard once you attempt to access the homework. The cost is $25, but there is a free trial period you can use if you need time to come up with the money for payment. Your homework average will count as 20% of your final grade. Quizzes: There will be several quizzes in class at regular intervals throughout the semester. Please refer to the schedule on Blackboard for information on the quiz dates. Quizzes will be administered through LumenOHM, and your Quiz Average will count as 20% of your final grade. Written Projects: There will be a brief written project due the day of each of the mid-term exams. Details and instructions will be provided in class, and the written projects will count as 10% of your final grade. Exams: There will be two mid-term exams scheduled at regular intervals throughout the semester. Approximate dates for the exams are available on the schedule on Blackboard. I will announce more specific details about exams in class about a week before they occur, so make sure you stay informed. Exams will be administered on LumenOHM, and will each count as 20% of your final grade. |

Attendance Policy |
Students are expected to be present and ON TIME for all class meetings, therefore attendance will be recorded at the beginning of each class meeting through the use of a seating chart established by the end of the first week. In addition to being present and on time for class, you are expected to be prepared and up to date in the material, remain for the entirety of each class meeting, and to be actively engaged in the daily activities and discussions. Any behavior which is disruptive or disrespectful to either the instructor or students in this class will not be tolerated, and anyone engaging in such behavior will be dealt with appropriately. |
